Case study: Madeira – Biometric Identification System
Through the Smart Island project, Madeira recently launched an innovative project for a biometric system that can authorize citizens to do various operations in relations with state institutions. Biometric systems also work at normal payment terminals throughout the island. The project was developed through European funds, with the support of the state of Madeira.
The system uses a secure fingerprint sensor with a standard smart card chip, allowing it to work at legacy terminals already deployed on the island. The innovation and development project in the field of biometric security was created in the headquarters in Madeira by several integrated companies called “Power of Touch” who also implemented it.
The first phase of the project will include 12 projects covering areas such as education, health, security, transport, payments and tourism, as well as public services.
The card’s identity system protects the identity of the holder and the card is simple and quick to use, just touch the sensor on the front of the card to verify the owner and proceed with the desired transaction, without the need for complex passwords or PIN codes.
Companies ensure secure management of the card, credentials and personal information of cardholders.
