Case Study: Smart City Copenhagen

Copenhagen is known as one of the most developed capitals of Europe, repeatedly voted the city with the highest standard of living. Danish cities developed new projects that stimulated economic development and increased quality of urban life, which came to define the concept of a “smart city”.

In order to improve the quality of life of the city’s inhabitants, the local administration of Copenhagen collaborated with the company Ramboll, through smart solutions without losing the big picture to support the sustainable development of the city.

The central heating system in Copenhagen, jointly developed with Ramboll, who have been instrumental in the development, design, construction and operation of the system for the past 45 years. The system effectively absorbs the heat generated by electricity and distributes it throughout the buildings.

Another important smart initiative for the city is the Copenhagen Metro. It is a driverless, fully automated, part underground, part aerial subway system. The existing metro is 21 kilometers long and has 22 stations. Ramboll also helped develop the Metro Cityring project from design to completion.

Nordhavn, the largest urban development in Scandinavia, which improves the quality of life of citizens through smart and long-term solutions, bringing together the fields of energy, environment, transport and urban planning.

For the past 30 years, Ramboll has supported the strategic development of the Danish capital as a smart city, and by addressing multidimensional urban solutions, the company has contributed to the development of the term “Copenhagenization” which has come to define a strategy to improve quality in all countries, even in Romania.
