Urbanization – the appearance of the smart city

In recent years, the percentage of urbanization has increased rapidly, with the urban population reaching a percentage of 57%, and experts predict that this percentage will reach 60% in the coming years.

The most urbanized countries are the USA, Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, with a percentage of 80%.

The most developed cities have had the infrastructure and opportunities to meet the needs of their citizens, but the cities that are just now developing do not possess sufficient resources and the level of poverty is increasing.

Common problems facing underdeveloped areas are inadequate infrastructure, urban stress, economic challenges and environmental impacts. Population growth, dwindling funds, inflation, layoff rates, congested traffic and criminality hinder the development of these cities and affect the quality of life of citizens.

The idea of a smart city can bring solutions to these problems, the concepts targeting several areas: easy access to information and education, management of water consumption, electricity and gas, modern medical services, public security, access to jobs, infrastructures and smart public transport, all adapted to citizens’ incomes.
